Lapidus Bunionectomy Procedure for Bunion Deformity

Bunions are a common foot deformity characterized by a painful, bony bump at the base of the big toe. This happens when the metatarsal bone moves out of place, causing the big toe to point toward the smaller toes and the joint to point out away from the foot. While conservative treatments work well to manage this condition, severe cases may require surgical intervention. 

Provided by fellowship-trained foot and ankle expert Francis E. Glaser, M.D., the Lapidus procedure is a procedure that realigns the toe, relieving pain. Unlike Lapiplasty^®, the Lapidus procedure involves fusing the metatarsal bone and one of the small bones in the midfoot. It includes removing cartilage surfaces from both bones, correcting the deformity, then using screws and often a small plate to keep the bones in place, allowing the bones to fuse together.
