Preparticipation Examination
The preparticipation physical exam (PPE) is an important step toward safe participation in junior high, high school, college, and professional sports. The purpose of the PPE is to ensure the safety and maintain the health of the athlete in training and competition, and not to disqualify or exclude him or her from play.
If an athlete is restricted from participation, the decision will be based on the best medically objective evidence, including how the aerobic demands of the sport impact the musculoskeletal and cardiac systems. An understanding of how strenuous the activity is in relation to the physical limitations is crucial. If an athlete fails the PPE, we will help him or her obtain clearance by doing further testing, evaluation, rehabilitation, and overcoming any biochemical deficits and limitations. Clearance will be given once the condition, problem, or illness is corrected or resolved.
