Our Joint Replacement & Revision Specialists
At Sierra Pacific Orthopedics, the region's most preferred orthopedic practice, our specialty-trained joint replacement and revision doctors are recognized experts in primary and revision joint replacement surgery.
Joint replacement and revision specialists perform surgery on many types of patients, although these patients most commonly have hip or knee issues and require knee replacement or hip replacement. These types of surgeries include total knee replacement, partial knee replacement, total hip replacement, and hip resurfacing.
During joint replacement surgeries, such as hip or knee replacement, an artificial joint replaces the existing joint. Today, joint replacement surgery is performed across the U.S., and these procedures offer a highly effective way to manage or eliminate joint pain.
People of all backgrounds can benefit from joint replacement. For instance, patients with arthritis in their knees can have a knee replacement procedure and enjoy walking again or adopt a new, more active lifestyle with reduced or eliminated knee joint pain. The same can be true of a person with a hip issue whose quality of life is significantly improved after hip replacement surgery.
Most joint replacements are successful the first time they are performed. However, a small percentage of all artificial joints must be replaced at some point. The term "joint revision" describes a surgery where an existing implant is removed and replaced with a new joint implant or prosthesis. Revisions are performed when an implant has reached the end of its expected lifespan or if there is an infection.
When Should I Seek Joint Replacement Surgery?
Joint conditions can result in a variety of symptoms. Pay attention to these symptoms so when you meet with a surgeon, you can provide him or her with detailed information regarding your pain. This will allow your doctor to develop a treatment plan, which may include joint replacement surgery, such as hip or knee replacement, or other nonsurgical options, such as physical therapy.
People with joint conditions sometimes report symptoms such as:
- Difficulty sleeping or performing daily activities because of joint pain
- Feeling of bones rubbing together when using joint
- Increasing reliance on a cane or walker
- Inflammation
- Instability in joints, such as the hip
- Joint, such as the knee joint, feels loose or out of place
- Limited range of motion
- Nerve blocks or cortisone injections no longer bring relief
- Stiffness in hip, knee, or affected joint
If any of these symptoms seem familiar, you may have one of the following joint issues:
- Arthritis (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis)
- Articular cartilage disorder
- Deformity
- Fracture
- Joint dislocation
- Osteoporosis
- Repetitive stress injury
- Sports-related injury
What to Expect With Our Joint Replacement and Revision Surgeons
After a thorough assessment, which may include electrodiagnostic medicine or on-site imaging (including X-ray, MRI, and bone density scans), our doctors will work with you to determine a course of treatment. Our experts always consider nonsurgical treatment before recommending surgery, such as anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy with one of our certified physical therapists, in-office orthobiologics, and weight management through the customized LeanMD health program.
When surgery is necessary, our surgeons utilize the state-of-the-art Summit Surgical facility and perform advanced joint replacement procedures, like partial knee replacement and total knee replacement. Additionally, as part of our Total Joint Center, our joint replacement surgeons work together to offer you comprehensive care to help you live with reduced pain and restored function.
